Help! How Do I Start Planning My Wedding?

Updated: Oct 2, 2023

I know I've said this before, and I will probably say it a thousand more times! Wedding planning brings out all the mixed feelings! When your excitement and joy start to clash with that feeling of the overwhelming planning process, you might find yourself asking,

Where do we even start?

Well, you can take a deep breath, because today we are starting a new series over the next few months that will break down those big checklist items into bite-sized "to-dos."

1) Start a "Wants" or a "Must-Haves" list

Not everyone has been dreaming about their wedding day since they were little. Or if you are like me, your "dream day" has changed about a thousand times because there are so many options! We always suggest making a must-have list. Think about the things that are important to you or the things you know you want at your wedding. Big or small! Remember to ask your spouse-to-be about what is important to them too. After all, it's also their day!

Still not sure where to start? We asked our brides to share their lists below!

2) Make an "Estimated" Wedding Guest List

You don't need to hunt down addresses just yet, but having an idea of how many people you want at your wedding will be important in finding the right venue!

3) Start a Search for Your Wedding Venue

With your "Want List" in mind and your estimated guest count in hand, it's time to start your venue search! If you have a specific ceremony location already picked out (church, park, etc.) start your reception search within a 20-30 minute drive from the ceremony. Some venues offer ceremony sites and reception locations in one package. Shop around a bit and get quotes for each option you like before making a final decision.

Start your search early! Whether you have a fixed date or flexibility, the earlier you start your venue search, the better your chances of finding the perfect venue!

We suggest starting 10-12 months before your ideal wedding day. However, if you are flexible, we've helped couples book beautiful venues much earlier!

And that's it! Those are our 3 simple tasks to help you get started! Next week we will share our Top 5 Things to Consider About Your Venue!
